Taken from a 1901 Supplement to The (Illiopolis) State Center Record

CHAS. M. BUCKLES Foreman State Center Record.

Since the subject of the present sketch has had much to do with the mechanical work of ILLUSTRATED ILLIOPOLIS, a few words concerning him are entirely relevant. Apprenticed to the printer’s trade, when scarcely fourteen, he has worked at it continuously, acquiring a facility and an expertness in every department. At sixteen years of age he conducted the Pleasant Plains Advocate, writing copy, setting type and doing all the work necessary to the publication of that paper, and doing it in a manner that won the admiration of the older heads in the business. At this time he had the distinction of being the youngest editor in the state of Illinois. He subsequently. was connected with the Piatt Co. Pilot and, in 1895, moved to Illiopolis where, for five years, he conducted the Sangamon Co. Record, which he sold last March to Mr. J. B. Higginson for whom he is now employed as foreman. At “the case” and at “the stone” it is safe to say Charley Buckles is thoroughly at home.
